Children and young people make progress across a wide range of measures, such as school attendance, a reduction in incidents and better regulation of their emotions. They are supported by staff to explore and express their feelings in a safe and appropriate way. Consistent boundaries and innovative incentives help children and young people to feel safe and work towards positive change and goals.

Children’s sense of identity and cultural heritage are fully supported by the staff. This includes working with the children’s families to maintain and strengthen contact, trips to their place of birth and project work on ‘Black Lives Matter’.

Staff provide a homely and nurturing environment that is child-centered. Decorations and furnishings are reflective of the child’s age and personality. For example, her artwork is displayed in nearly every room and her toys are well looked after by the staff. This offers her a sense of belonging and ownership of the home.

Residential care planning is outstanding. This exceptionally caring and nurturing service provides young people with a safe and happy place to live. Strong collaborative partnerships ensure that young people’s needs are thoroughly assessed. This means that they receive the most effective and consistent care and support. From their initial starting points, young people gain emotional stability that strengthens their confidence and self-esteem.

Children enjoy positive and trusting relationships with staff. One social worker said that their child is incredibly happy here, is much more confident, has made friends in the area and is enjoying life.

Children regularly attend and achieve in education. One child has recently moved out of the home. Prior to moving he gained qualifications in Mathematics and English. Another child continues to complete work and exams towards her GCSEs. She is on target to gain these qualifications and has applied for a place at college. Since living at the home this child has had improved concentration and engagement at school.

Staff work well as part of the wider support network to plan for the children’s care. Their strong working relationships with parents, social workers, teachers, and health workers make sure that children get the best possible support that continues to meet their needs.

Children said that they are happy and safe and enjoy living at this home. One child said, ’It is the best’, and another said, ’We are like family.’ A professional commented on the good progress a child has made while living at the home.
